It is no secret that your body changes over time, and as your body changes, your dental needs change. There is no reason why you can’t enjoy good dental health during the second half of your life, but there are some things to consider that may not have been an issue for you when you were younger.  For example, the nerves in your teeth get smaller as you get older, which might make it more difficult to notice cavities or other problems. Older people need to monitor their oral health for gum disease and receding gums, and cavities at the roots of their teeth.

As you age, you need to continue to brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, and floss once a day. If you have reached a point in your life that you have trouble holding a toothbrush, or have a range of motion issues, you might want to consider using an electric toothbrush, a water flosser or a floss threader. If you wear dentures, make sure you clean them once a day and soak them in a denture solution overnight.

You should drink plenty of water. Not only will it keep your body hydrated, but it will also keep your mouth moist and wash the bacteria and acids from your mouth. If your water is fluoridated, it will help keep your teeth strong. It is never too late to quit using tobacco. In addition to putting you at a higher risk for cancer, gum disease, and respiratory problems, tobacco and nicotine will damage your teeth.

Continue to see your dentist twice a year for cleanings and exams. Talk with your dentist about any changes you notice in your mouth, teeth, gums or tongue. If you have been diagnosed with a health issue or you start a new medication, you should let your dentist know.

Aging does not automatically mean that you will lose teeth. With conscientious oral care and regular dental visits, you can enjoy a healthy smile for the rest of your life. If you would like to see Dr. Sterling Whitworth at Covington Dental Partners in Covington, Georgia, call 770-786-9339 today.
